‘‘Gandhi studies aspire to examine and elucidate the relationship between life and thought, between experiment and practice and between Gandhiji and the institutions that he founded and experiments that he inspired,” is
the theme of the series. Biographical studies of Gandhiji and his associates, histories of institutions and ideas, along with translations of scholarly and memoir literature from various Indian languages would form part of this endeavour.
The fact that institutions and universities around the world are introducing Gandhi Studies as a subject, speaks volumes about the universal appeal of the remarkable icon, his philosophies and principles. It also speaks about Gandhi’s relevance when it comes to solving modern-day conflicts. However, some great works on Gandhi, penned in regional languages need to be translated into English so that it can be accessed by the global community.
Orient Longman has created an editorial board, comprising scholars like Narayan Desai, Gautam Bajaj, Sudarshan Iyengar, Anupam Mishra and Suresh Sharma, for this special offering. The series editors will be scholar Ashis Nandy, Tridip Suhrud and Australia-based Thomas Weber, who has authored a book on Dandi yatra called ‘On the Salt March.’ The series from Orient Longman is committed to no one fixed way of understanding Gandhiji; it hopes like Gandhiji himself to be deeply dialogic.
