Shivanasamudram is a waterfall in southern Karnataka, Malavalli taluk, Mysore District. The Kaveri river splits here around a small island. At Sivasamudram island the river drops 320 ft (98 m), forming famous falls known as Gagan chukki and Bara Chukki. India's first hydroelectric plant (built in 1902) was on the left falls and supplied power to the city of Bangalore. Bangalore when electrified in 1906, was the first city in Asia to be electrified and to have electric street lights.
The two streams meet in a spectacular cascade.
It is a 4 km deviation from the route to Kollegal from Bangalore (Via Kanakapura). The waterfall is 50 m tall, and the hydro-electric power station which is also one of Asia's oldest ,is still functional. This spectacular waterfall is surrounded by hill forests of the Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary.
