Karaoke is great in the classroom. The GREATEST motivator and one of the most subconscious and effective ways to teach a language.
Kids are inspired and will ask you to make a karaoke of their favourite song. Better yet, get the kids making them. They learn so much as they produce them and the pride in their product is a joy.
HOW TO DO IT.
1) Upload the Karaoke player at www.karafun.com IT IS FREE!
2) Download any of the Karaoke files I've produced. Play them and learn how to use the player. Many cool features. Some files are .CLOZE that means they have parts left out , so the song becomes a listening activity. After playing the CLOZE, simply play its partner, the authentic song/file.
3) Once you are playing the songs, try to edit them using the Karafun editor.
The editor comes with the download and allows you to make a complete karafun song, just like I did! You should even be able to edit my files, I've left them unprotected.
4) Set up a request box and get requests from the kids!!! As mentioned, get them making the karaoke tunes!!
5) VIP (very important point). GET A MICROPHONE! Essential. Every school has them, 5m cord. Use an adaptor and plug into a portable stereo. Put setting on tape/record. Then you have great sound. Also use for the normal class. Better sound in the classroom and kids love the attention of a mike!
You can also get a traditional karaoke player at www.gosing.com IT IS FREE! Good library of songs and I have other sites for new songs which will play in this player.....Change the background picture, load up the gosing file and you are set......
I will elaborate more in this space, in the days to come, about the tricks to using Karaoke in the classroom. Be creative and know, it isn't as simple as putting on a song and singing. To help with language acquisition, there are many other things to prepare for and ways to present / presend the song.
Please send your students to www.singshot.com to record their own karaoke songs and share with others. Play them in class even! Great site and students can hear others sing their favourite songs as well. Also user friendly for class, hear real people, singing real songs! You might also try www.mouseovermusic.com . A small collection of current songs there, with a fun format. Also visit another karafun sharer, Rob, at his GEPIK Noraebang site.
