Kichesipirini Algonquin First Nation writes:
We have always been traders. Keep the tradition alive!!! After first having seen the quality of Kichesipirini merchandise at a trade fair in 1603 at Tadousac Champlain negotiated with Kichesipirini Chief Tessouat to visit in the future and become trade allies. Champlain made his first exploration of the Ottawa River during May, 1613 and reached the fortified Kichesipirini village at Morrison Island. Unlike the other Algonkin, the Kichesipirini, or Island Nation, did not change location with the seasons, following the game, but had become expert traders, Odaawa. They had several permanent villages and fishing sites throughout the territory with well decorated cemetaries. They had chosen a very strategic point of location astride the centuries old trade route between the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Valley and had prospered through the collection of tolls from other native traders passing through their territory for thousands of years. They had alsobecome farmers, displaying to their corn fields and various other crops. They also grew beans, pumpkin, and sunflowers. The Kichesipirini were also responsible for mining, and a special stone prized for the production of pipes was extracted within their territory. Although they welcomed Champlain's visit and business offer they were very careful to protect the well established trade monopoly that they enjoyed. The Kichesipirini have continued as traders and business people for the entire time, certainly contributing to the Canadian and provincial governments attempts to not recognize them and their economicly powerful history and identity. It is to the benefit of all Algonquin people that this important part of Canadian history be accurately portrayed in the ongoing Algonquin Land Claim process.
