Digital Photo Art
These are photos I've converted into watercolor and acrylic "paintings". After cropping, the photo is filtered with a one-time pass through the "dry brush" filter in Photoshop. Then a very faint image of the photo ( resized) is printed on 90 lb cold press watercolor paper (Aquarius) and in some cases onto 'canvas paper'. The photo is then enhanced by over-painting with watercolors, watercolor pencils or acrylics.

Reference Photo From Hanging Fuchsia Plant.jpg
A piece of white mat board placed behind this hanging plant effectively blocked out the background and let the sunlight create the shadows.

Bougainvillea_12x18.jpg
This photo-art was created by placing a while mat behind the flower to take the digital photo. The image was filtered in Photoshop and printed on Aquarius 90 lb cold press watercolor paper and enhanced with standard tube watercolor.

9x9 Roses_WC.jpg
This is an experiment using a digital image I took of a wild rose growing in my little garden. I used Photoshop to eliminate the background and then printed a very faint color image of the roses on 90 lb cold press. Then it was almost like "paint by number" when I overpainted it with strong saturations of watercolor and watercolor pencils. Cheating ? Yep, but it was fun :))

Bicycle_WC.jpg
My daughter cut this out of a magazine and asked if I could use the same technique to create a "watercolor painting" from the photo. This is the result. Overpainted on 90 lb cold press with watercolor and watercolor pencils. Loads of fun.. She now has a half dozen or so of her favorite "photo-watercolors" hanging in her home :) I know, I know ... I cheated. :)

Blue Heaven Restaurant Key West Florida.jpg
This is an enhanced digital print created from the snapshot below. After the distractions in the snapshot were eliminated via Photoshop, the image was passed just once through the "dry brush" filter and a very faint color image was printed on on 90 lb watercolor paper and then overpainted with watercolor and watercolor pencils. The final 'painting' measures 16 x 11 inches. (Best viewed at the "Original Size")

Key West_Blue Heaven Restaurant_Reference Photo.jpg
This is the snapshot my daughter gave me and asked if I would create a painting from it. As you see, there are lots power lines, telephone poles, traffic lights, etc. Photoshop came to the rescue and allowed me to "Clone out" the distractions and prepare the working print for the painting. See the completed digital overpaint above.

Grandson 3_Photo Watercolor.jpg
Some viewers have commented that they liked seeing the reference photo for comparison, so I'll now include them whenever possible. Same photo-art technique but applied to portraits- not for everyone for sure but my grandkids like them !
