Mostly portraits

When I paint a portrait, I try to capture the spirit of the model. The surface appearance is secondary. I have done hundreds of portraits over the years, so getting an accurate likeness is not that hard now. I try to dig much deeper to draw out the essence, so that it feels like the person is actually in the room with you. That is the real challenge for me.

The whole thing. I have shown the model in her own kitchen. Soon after This was finished, they changed the wallpaper, so this is sort of a historic document.

This portrait of the well-loved Mrs. Phillips was commissioned quite a few years ago. I paid special attention to her expression and the 'look in her eyes':)
