Hello!
Now that I've hit the 40 song mark I figured I should write a bit
about this collection. This folder contains ogg/mp3 conversions of
"Demoscene" tunes. If you're not familiar with the demoscene, you
should check out:
Those should give you some idea about what this is all about.
Basically, this music is all created by computer enthusiasts in their spare time.
You are free to copy this music and listen to it to youir hearts' content
(the source files I used are all freely distributed, too) but
you may not sell or include it in any commercial works or collections
without the express permission of the artist (not me - I am NOT the author of these tunes!).
Much demoscene music is created in tools called "trackers".
These programs began on early Amiga computers and were used to make music
based on samples of instruments, etc. Since these tracker formats aren't
supported (or are supported badly) by most media players and portable audio
players, I've begun converting my favorite tunes to "streaming" formats such
as mp3 and ogg-vorbis, which my portable player can handle. In addition to
replaying the tunes, I also master them using Audacity on Linux and plugins
from the computer music toolkit. With these, I can get a clean, balanced
version suitable for general listening.
As you can see, most of these files are in ogg vorbis format. Ogg vorbis
is a free, patent-free, open source, high-performance audio codec. Visit
http://www.xiph.org/ for more information. Unfortunately, esnips
doesn't support ogg vorbis in it's web-based player (hint hint - to esnips developers). However, I will maintain
a playlist of the MP3 formatted files for easy listening. Check it out
Anyway - I hope you enjoy these tunes. I also have a collection of tunes not converted from tracked/chip formats: http://www.esnips.com/web/demoscenetunes2 .
Feel free to mirror these
files, as well. And once you get done with these tunes, tune in to Nectarine Demoscene Radio at www.scenemusic.eu.
Cheers!
