French black marble with gilt metal hunting scene mantel clock by Japy.JPG
Japy Freres (also Japy Freres et Cie) produced clocks that were generally very ornate in the period from mid 1800's to early 1900's and also supplied high quality clock works to many clock manufacturers. SOLD Japy Freres was founded by Frederic Japy of Beaucount, born 1749 who first made movements for the clock industry at his factory in 1777, becoming the largest and most commercially important clockmaking concern in France. The business continued after his death.

French black marble with gilt metal hunting scene mantel clock by Japy..JPG
Japy Frères was famous in the 19th century for mass production of good quality movements of the ‘pendule de Paris’ type at Badeval in France. The ormolu clock is a fine example of French manufacture and required the skills of many craftsmen to complete. On some clocks you may find a prize medallion stamped on the back plate of the clock referring to the award of the Grand Medal of Honor to Japy Frères et Cie. SOLD
