HOW TO USE THESE FILES/SONGS;
Please download the free player at www.karafun.com, so you can read these books. The player is free, a small file, and easy to download. You must also have the latest version of DirectX installed from Microsoft (also free). You will be redirected there, if your computer doesn't have it.
There are two main types of books presently.
1) Audio books in karaoke format, usually read by the author him or herself (Dr. Seuss, Robert Munch)
2) Books in powerpoint, most made by students. Some with an audiofile. To play the sound, simply download both the powerpoint file and the audio file, into the same folder. (the audio file has the same name and is at the end of this folder) Then, simply play the powerpoint [view show]. Lots of great stories!!!
Reading is necessary for young learners - so they can recognize the patterns, stresses and rhythms unique to the English language.
Your students might be familiar with many of these stories, especially the fairy and folk tales. Play the story and if you have a strong reader, turn off the sound and have a student read from time to time.
Some stories have different voices. You might get the students as individuals or in groups, to read different voices, as you go along.
After the stories, prepare some easy comprehension questions, a quiz or a personalizing activity.
This might be;
1. a role play, where students act out in their own words, the story.
2. a puppet show where students create puppets and perform the story.
3. A character speech. Each student choses one character and gives a speech WHY they did certain things and how they felt about it.
4. Rewrite the story and design a mini book. Students use their own words and go through the editing process.
Also see my video book folder where you will find a full set of leveled readers. Great stuff with worksheets. Also visit Michael T's powerpoints of True Stories. A great resource with quizzes for each story. Also many printable leveled readers.
I have begun converting most ppts to flash. To play in your internet browser, install the Adobe Flashplayer plug in but I recommend using a stand alone player so you have full screen. The best is eolsoft player. Also in many languages.
Good luck and happy reading!
