Sung by Smt.Vimala Shenoy, this is an old poem composed by anonymous Konkani writer. A story narrated thru poem - this is an example for 'Kavanaroopi Katha' in our language. It is passed on from generations to generations not only due to its beauty but due to its puranik theme as well. The metre or rhythm in which this is composed is worth analyzing, because it may not have been adopted from another language and therefore unique for Konkani.

A story of the two dolls - unique in our folklore - is presented here (Baavli is the word popular in Cochin area, denoting 'Doll'). Children at very young age get away with such stories told by grandmas. And these are preserved by generations through word of mouth.

So we have the second half of the story to listen here. In fact stories inculcate positive aspects of learning our mother tongue as well. Developing imagination, good vocabulary, expressions, communication skills, interactive nature - all these can be achieved from the childhood even unknowingly.

Duddi - the pumpkin - is a character in this Konkani folktale. Listen to the first half of the grandma story here. Sure enough, you will have some such version popular in your area or in your family. Encourage kids to repeat these funny stories to preserve our folklore.

Shobaane is a traditional Amchigele song heard during 'Arati' functions. It may be during a child's birthday, when elderly women of the family gather to bless the child. Or, it may also be during 'Pumsavan' or 'Kappada Aarati' of a married daughter (or daughter in law) to bless the child in the womb. However nowadays there are not many ladies who can sing this by-heart. Hope this audio piece (Sung by Sudha, Rekha & Aparna Pai) will help memorize the Konkani song.

| Is our folk literature useful for aspiring Konkani poets and story writers ? How to make use of our heritage ? With a few examples of Hovis, see how Sri.P.G.Kamath, an elderly Konkani writer from Kerala, establishes this point in a well studied speech, delivered in 1992. | This is a Konkani lullaby popular in Kerala. One can note the composition is interwoven with several Marathi words, which point to the age of the song. Besides, the anonymous author might have migrated to Kerala from an area where Marathi was equally homely with Saraswat community. Thanks to Sri.N.Prasen Kumar Mallya (Kochi) who sung this with an orchestra, attracting present day music lovers too. |

Adv. Uday Bhembre (Goa) analyzes the Konkani folk tale during a Seminar of Kerala Konkani Academy, held in 1992. The cow story, narrated in Kerala too, upholds a few noble values for the entire mankind. It is worth to be included in Konkani text books. Read the narrative article contributed in the web site www.radioidli.net also

This is a folk song from Kerala, with influence of Marathi, indicating its antiquity. The story of a cow narrated through this song is popular in South Canara as well as Goa. It contains some noble human values which are worth emulating. Sung by Aparna Pai, this song is presented with an article in www.radioidli.net where you will find it archived under 'Konkani Gems'.
