Greetings from Jerusalem!
|
|
|
| |

Israel-Palestine and the surrounding lands offer the visitor an incredible richness of visual impressions: dramatic landscapes, unusual flora and fauna, intriguing remains of ancient civilizations, the architectural legacies of all who came here across the ages (and everybody came here!), and a dizzying diversity of peoples and cultural expressions. Here is a humble sampler, as seen through my lens -- plus a few historic images and other curiosities... Tom Powers Main Page Contact Links |

| Portion of a ca. 1857 photograph by Englishman Francis Frith taken from the 'Tower of David' at the Citadel. It shows the domes and belfry of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, minaret of the Mosque of Omar, and Hezekiah's Pool. Bordering the pool at lower right is the Mediterranean Hotel in its original location (of three!) where author Herman Melville stayed in 1857. |

| From one of my favorite vantage points, atop a hostel building on Jerusalem's Prophets Street, Damascus Gate glows with the festive lights of Ramadan; above is the Dome of the Rock. |

| In March 2007 some friends and I travelled to Mount Nebo in Jordan and encountered this view at sunset, looking westward across the northern end of the Dead Sea. On the skyline (with binoculars) we could pick out the towers atop the Mount of Olives 45 km/30 mi. away! |

| A bit of shaky, amateur video circulating on the internet shows the power of a flash flood--up close! This was filmed in Nahal Tsin (Zin) in Israel's Negev. |

| At the top (north), the large buildings in a zigzag configuration within a wooded compound are St. Stephens Convent (the Ecole Biblique). At the bottom, where the streets converge in a "V" at the north wall of the Old City, is Damascus Gate. The small wooded compound in the very center is the Garden Tomb. |

| A digitally stitched panorama of the domes, steeples and minarets of Jerusalem's Christian Quarter. The view is looking north from the roof of the Lutheran Hospice in the heart of the Old City. |

| The convent and guesthouse of the Sisters of Zion (AKA "Ecce Homo"), lying along the famous Via Dolorosa, offers an unparalleled rooftop view. Here their chapel dome and the minaret across the street frame the Dome of the Rock. |
