Greetings from Jerusalem...

DamascusMy name is

Tom Powers

I have been living in Israel since 1999, experiencing the Land and its people and learning all I can about this unique place! I love sharing with people its diverse wonders -- the history, archaeology, natural beauty, and the Biblical connections -- all amid the crosscurrents of culture and sometimes conflicting human aspirations in this shared land...

I am an American citizen living in Jerusalem, a native English speaker, and a graduate of a Ministry of Tourism-approved tour guide course
.  If you are considering a visit to Israel in the coming days, I would be very pleased to hear from you and provide any assistance I can.

The articles posted below grew out of my fascination with this land, and also from my studies in the guide course -- I hope you will find some of them interesting and instructive. For more about Me, click on my photo above.

SPECIAL VIDEO

Holiday Greetings from the Holy Land

On 27 DEC 2006, Jerusalem was graced with a bit of snow, the magic and beauty of which inspired this humble little homemade movie intended as a holiday greeting. I offer it in the spirit of friendship and goodwill, with my best wishes. The scenes are of Jerusalem's St. Stephen's Convent (The Ecole Biblique), where I live and work as a volunteer. Peace to you all...

A Second Look at the 'Alexander Son of Simon' Ossuary: Did It Hold Father and Son?.htm
This article of mine is published on-line by Biblical Archaeology Review, since September 2006. It deals with an intriguing ossuary (bone chest) discovered in Jerusalem in 1941 and its probable links to the New Testament. A version also appeared in ARTIFAX (Autumn 2006) under the title "Digging Deeper: The 'Alexander Son of Simon' Ossuary. What Does It Really Say--And Mean?" My previous articles on the same topic appeared in ARTIFAX (Autumn 2002, q.v.) and BAR (July-August 2003).

The Church of the Holy Sepulchre: Some Perespectives from History, Geography, Architecture, Archaeology and the Holy Scriptures.doc
This article evolved over several years, beginning as an essay to accompany a "virtual tour" of the church (www.holysepulchretour.com). A later version was published in three installments in 2004/2005 in ARTIFAX, a USA-based biblical archaeology digest (www.bibleartifax.com). The version posted here is illustrated with plans and photos.
