The Black Hare 1.1.2009.mp3
Had't played for years but it came into my head. If it were not that the lady is the driving force would not be pc, but as she is! Loosely in the style of Mr Carthy but nowhere near as competent.

Blackwaterside 1.1.2009.mp3
My take on Bert Jansch's great arrangement, which was the key to my beginning the route from there to here when I was 14. Dropped D

Parsons Farwell 20.8.1992.MP3
A Playford tune which I used to use with the Wolsey Folk Dance Group, originally on guitar, then on accordion, so here on both. I am not sure what the 'drum'is all about but ok for archive. Played here in Am rather than the as written Dm but easily moved.

Walter Bulwer 2 & 1.MP3
Parts 2 and 1 from Norfolk across the barbed wire divide. THis was the original idea for the set which wound up as an ESMM ceilidh set. THe mix is from the old tascam so a bit of a dogs breakfast. One of those tasks which isn't worth re-doing for the archive, as is will do! Again a bit hackneyed and Old Swan is the modern definitive version.

Dancing at Whitsun 1.9.1992.MP3
Educational version of a song very popular in the 70's when my musical taste ossified, a bit maudlin and on this showing it was a day when a cup of coffe might have improved the pace. A bit of a dirge, but it is a song of sadness and of hope. G shapes, I think on the third or fifth fret.

Wolsey March 28.8.1992.MP3
a second upload of this tune played as a rag rather than as a march with some elementary rhythm guitar on the backup. I think I must have drunk too much coffee that day, (still a failing).

White Dress 18.8.1992.MP3
Another nugget, (of uncompressed coal) from the 1992 Portastudio sessions. Bill twiddling on the piano in the background to this one. Some clipping in the choruses. Perhaps I'll do a posh mix at some stage but this was what I saved at the time.

New York Gals 17.8.1992.MP3
This was one of the 'Last Resort' ceilidh songs which I have given a rather lower key interpretation than the full on folk rock band version. An old chestnut by any reckoning. Portastudio mixdown from 1992.

Flash Company 8.9.1992.MP3
A lost recording from 1992 of one of about four songs which I sing without accompaniment and which I have kept on the list. I think I was playing with the portastudio so recording quality consistent with the technology but still one of my favourite Suffolk songs

Sunlight drawing near .mp3
A song written in my teenage years, (some time ago) which seems to hold up reasonably. Composed & all copyright and performance rights W.Johnston. Recorded in what was obviously a period of reminiscence in 2002.

Mystic .mp3
A self penned song from a period in the 70's when I was listening to a lot of ISB I guess. Very in a style and of a period but ok for all that. Recorded in 2002 and edited 2008. Copyright and all rights W.Johnston

Walking the Street .mp3
An archive recording of a song that i had forgotten about which i wrote when very angry at age about 15. The theme and sentiment regarding unprompted street violence are still regrettably current. As close as I get to punk I guess. Copyright and PPR William Johnston. Am/Em with move to major F/C/G for choruses

Barrack St 2 17.3.07 faster.mp3
The other version, just a small difference in speed gives a wholly new feel to this piece. Still slightly slower than live but closer. C shapes capo 4 in E

Marrowbones.mp3
A ri-fol-lol-the-diddle-i-dee song and a sound message to retain a solid relationship with your doctor even if that with your wife may have its difficulties. C shapes, capo 4 in E with the melody reinforced by tenor guitar line. I arranged this from 'the book' many years ago. It is less laid back live! Recorded 3.11.2007

no more worries.mp3
One of my own songs so all rights reserved W.Johnston. A demo of a song written in the early 1970's. Recorded late 90's front room quality but not bad for all of that. Lots of energy. Basic first position chords, CFDG, but not necessarily in that order.

Beggar Girl 99.mp3
8 years old at the time of upload. Recorded live to fostex without separation or the opportunity to edit significantly. The arrangement is in G moving up to barred C and G shapes on frets 7 and 5 to play the higher part of the tune. Composed/adapted by Richard Thompson, the tune being a variant of Red Haired Boy, for which see my 'country etc' folder to compare.

The Ploughman.mp3
A song from the 'Penguin Book of English Folk Songs' with a magical melody. PLayed on 'C' shapes capo 4. The only other person i know who plays/played this is John Goodluck. John is alive and well and playing again as a part of the Suffolk folk community, particularly at the Steamboat Tavern sessions in Ipswich.
