Experimental Paintings

Style is a reference to creativity and comes in all possible media. As a contemporary painter it is not important to consider style. No more than in creativity, style and content is formed by the way we think and feel. ‘The style reflects and projects the “inner form” of collective thinking and feeling’. Style is simply the unconscious by-product of the artistic endeavor. Style happens and can be a risk for art not to be itself.

A Night Like This

In this series of large scale experimental paintings I have explored the colours, tones and emotive power of the moments just before and after nightfall. These expressionistic works inhabit a tentative space, close to pure abstraction yet suggestive of landform.

I think style is a legitimate concern with painting. Every artist begins by emulating the work that has inspired and influenced them. We all seek to recreate the two or three images that impacted on us at an early age and in doing so adopt a pre existing style in order to express ourselves. What is really hard is letting go of that style and venturing into unknown territiory. Style becomes a safety zone allowing you to be comfortable with your work but ultimately inhibiting the works ability to truly communicate. It's just so hard to let go though.
-I like the little stabs of colour in your paintings by the way.
