Introduction: Buddha's Foremost Disciples' Lives
Posted on Apr. 9 2008

Namo Tassa Bhagavato Arahato Sammā-Sambuddhassa

Homage to Him, the Exalted, the Worthy, the Fully Enlightened One

Hello. I wish all of us are always well and happy and free from mental and physical suffering.

This is the second folder I have created and I wish to create more in the future when necessary. This folder contains the biographies of the eminent disciples of the Buddha. It serves as an inspiration for us to emulate them and walk their path until we reach the ultimate goal, the supreme bliss, Nibbana. Also, it reminds us of the long-lasting fragrance of the Buddha's and His disciples' virtues and motivates us to study and practise the Buddha's teachings with greater zeal, steadfastness and determination. Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

Please give your comments or suggestions for further improvement of this folder. Thank you for visiting my folder. I will keep updating this folder from time to time so keep visiting. Besides, I have other folder that contains an important resource of the Buddha's teachings. Feel free to visit it and download any file you want. And most importantly, we must always practise the Buddha's teachings for the love of ourselves and others.

Please forgive me if any of my words might have hurt your feelings. Take care and we must always remember to cultivate Right View, the first of the Ariya Eightfold Path, and positive mindset, emotions, and thoughts (which are influenced by one's own view).

Metta,

Chen Fong

The Life of Sāriputta.pdf
Venerable Sāriputta was one of the two chief disciples of the Buddha. Highly regarded as the Marshal of the Dhamma, he was second only to Buddha in the depth and range of his understanding and his ability to teach the Doctrine of Deliverance. Beloved throughout the time, he was unique in his patience and steadfastness; and modest and upright in thought, word and deed; and as a man who remembered with gratitude even a small act of kindness done to him.

Māha Moggallānā.pdf
Māha Moggallānā was the other chief disciple of the Buddha. He was foremost among all other Bhikkhus, who have renounced their life under the religion of Buddha to tread the path to Nibbana, in supernormal powers. This account tells us about his family background, conduct and achievements, which are a beacon of inspiration, a bright shining moon that reminds us of the great virtues man can achieve.

Maha Kassapa: Father of the Sangha.pdf
Venerable Maha Kassapa shared with the Buddha seven of the thirty-two "Marks of a Great Man". He possessed to the highest degree the ten "qualities that inspire confidence". He was also a model of a disciplined and austere life devoted to meditation. After the Parinibbana of the Buddha, he was elected to preside over the First Council of the Sangha which had been summoned on his urgent advice.

Ānanda: the Guardian of the Dhamma.pdf
Venerable Ānanda was the Buddha's close attendant for 25 years, giving his selfless service and attention to the Buddha. He was highly regarded as the Guardian of the Dhamma who preserved the teachings for the benefit of sentient beings. He was pre-eminent among those who had heard much (of the Buddha's words) and who had a remarkable retentive memory and in three other qualities. He could repeat discourses flawlessly up to 60,000 words and recite 15,000 four-line stanzas of the Buddha.
