About my work:
My paintings all have a general theme of quiet solitude (my favorite). Being in a place devoid of the hustle and bustle of human life, but not excluding humanity altogether. I try to show a timeless place; a place that seems as if it has always been, and will always continue to be.
My current series is of places from around Japan. I have lived thus far in 3 different cities here (Kyoto, Toyohashi, and Amagasaki) and traveled to probably 20-30 different towns and cities.  My favorite places here are the small towns because they give a real sense of natural Japan.

About me:
My name is Chris Bogert, and I'm a painter, woodblock printer, and shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) musician & maker. I currently live in Amagasaki, Hyogo, Japan where I study painting and drawing as well as the shakuhachi flute. I'm a graduate of Evergreen State college in Washington State. I mainly studied watercolor painting, woodblock printing, and Chinese/Japanese art history. I want to focus more on my artwork now.  My last job was quite time consuming and allowed me very little time for artwork.

Exhibitions:

SFCC gallery: group show April-June 2004

Maximum Exposure: Studio and Gallery: group show (17 pieces by me) July-Sept 2004.

Been rather busy since then, looking to exhibit  in Japan, and have built up a body of work.

Yasaka jinja.JPG
Yasaka Shrine, once called Gion Shrine, is a Shinto shrine in the Gion District of Kyoto, Japan. Situated at the east end of Shijō-dōri, it was built originally in 656. The shrine includes several buildings, including gates, a main hall and a stage. In 869 the mikoshi (portable shrines) of Gion Shrine were paraded through the streets of Kyoto to ward off an epidemic that had hit the city. This was the beginning of the Gion Matsuri, an annual festival which has become world famous.

Houraiji.JPG
Houraiji is a small Shingon sect temple high up in the mountains of Aichi prefecture, near the small town of Shinshiro. It is said there are 2000 steps leading up to the hondo (main temple building). If not 2000, then certainly something like that. I was very tired after that hike which lasted 8 hours total. Beyond the hondo the trail winds up and up to the top of Houraiji mountain. Then you can walk along the ridges and down into the valleys on the mountains.
