You mentioned Jim Baen
if you would bother to read what he wrote on the first page, you would see his. and many other peoples opinion about "book piracy".
If all you're worried about is the poor starving authors, why are you complaining about copyright violations of authors who died years ago?
It was you or someone like you that got Ayn Rand deleted.
You're a self righteous idiot who's accomplishing nothing besides forcing me to take a trip to the library instead of being able to access the book on my computer.

Dear Spy,

you go call people thieves, and say they don't want to admit it,

What do you call yourself, you go and download the same books even more! TO CHECK THE COPYRIGHT!!!! who are you trying to fool?

Even if you did delete them after you downloaded them all and opened them and read them(!!) what makes you any different from people you call criminal. You are committing a crime, even if you are trying to help poor authors. The purpose does not justify the act. Good intentions or bad ones you are a criminal yourself.

Hard to admit, ha! well live with it. you are caught red handed.

What people forget are that authors, even e-authors, need to eat.  Not every author on the real or cyber bookshelf gets a big advance.  In fact, most e-authors I know get no advance at all.  And, in fact, the people who are print published don't necessarily get a large check on signing, either.  These books are their secondary livelihood for most authors, unless you're a big name (Nora Roberts, Steven King, etc.).  I have no doubt that most of you wouldn't ever consider walking into a business that you think looks neat and take the office manager's paycheck, let alone the receptionist's or the mail clerk's money.  But that's what you're doing when you distribute this stuff for free.  You are taking money out of a paycheck from someone who has worked darn hard to earn it.

If you'd like to read some of their works for free, check out their websites, where most have several freebies to take.  Or you can go to your local library, where you can find several shelves of free novels that have been donated or purchased for the sole purpose of lending.

So you're saying that is okay to steal?  Shame on you because that is exactly what you are doing!  Authors are just normal people who get a pittance for each book sold and you are taking food out of their mouths and their childrens mouths and not helping them pay their bills!
My apologies to you for living in a poor country but that still gives you NO RIGHT to steal from people trying to make an honest living!
You are correct about that sword - be very careful you aren't cut because you will be cut before we will!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Selkie -- I want to thank you for standing up for authors.  I know of at least one e-book author who struggles hard just to be able to afford to eat.  She supports herself with her writing, and she's probably poorer than most of the people who are here complaining about the cost of books.  The royalty of $1 or so she'd make off one book means a lot to her.  I worry about her constantly, and I've done what I can to help her.  The idea of her going hungry really hurts me.  So these people who steal books piss me off.   Most authors are not rich.  Most of us make very little money, and make less than minimum wage if you think about the amount of time it takes to write a book.  Some of us are more fortunate, of course.  But they're exceptions to the rule.
