cobelco (pronounced "CO-bell-co") is the alter ego of J. Scott Womack, a musician and DJ who embraces an eclectic but playful blend of electronics, acoustic instrumentation, and analog noises of all sorts. Womack grew up near Portland, Oregon in the small coastal community of Astoria. Womack took up music as a teenager, playing guitar, keyboard and turntables in a band with mentor and friend Ian Corbin (GhostRockIt, The Conversation Heart). He took on the stage name "Smegmaster Spin" and played shows with such talents as Jona Bechtolt (The Blow, YACHT) and was the first DJ to ever colaborate with Bechotlt on some of his early electronica endeavors in the latter part of the '90s. Womack began working with software and intergrating it into his live sets in 2002. He teamed up with fellow producer Jeremy Highhouse in 2004 to start what was then "The Brothers Kobelco". Their collaboration won them instant respect in the Portland IDM scene after releasing several songs between 2004-2007. In 2006, Womack unveiled "cobelco", his streamlined solo project, with the largely instrumental album "the sound of jib-Tek" which was followed by "Break the Line" in 2008, both released on the Carson Labs Label. Womack now based out of Denver strives to be unique as He continues to search for his own voice in this vast and growing culture of electronic music. In the past 10 years Womack has consistently been a turntableist combining his downtempo, ambient and dance music into unique live sets played at fashion shows, dance clubs, art spaces as well as on his various radio performances.
