When I woke up (long story) at the worshipcentral day Matt Redman was talking about the range of subject matter in old hymns. So this week I started looking online for hymns and quickly found these words, I read the first line and heard a tune and here's the result. The words are variously attributed to Mary Ann Serrett Barber (1801-1884) or Mary S. B. Shindler (1810-1883) in America I believe. Beautiful words, so well crafted.
