Abu Dhabi in the spring of 1997. Wallpapered taxi interiors, the Corniche, the comet, Star TV, a taxi driver trying to drive me into the hotel lobby, Friday prayers spilling out into the street, disharmonious amplified muezzins from every direction before sunrise, buying a tin of tuna for the feral cats, and trying to buy a calculator from a shop assistant who clearly despised westerners. The resident expats hadn't picked up the change, though it was pretty obvious to anybody passing through.
